The Truth About Yoga
(For Every Age & Body)
I’m going to let you in on a little secret (actually, I’d like to shout it from the roof-tops): Yoga is NOT human-pretzel aerobics. Sure, extreme poses may tickle the imagination, but most of us have different goals: Comfort often being number one (especially as we age).
Let’s put Comfort in context.
- Do you feel rested when waking and remain energized all day (without caffeine or sugar) or do you fatigue easily?
- Are you generally free from pain and stiffness or is that your chronic lived experience?
As an Occupational Therapist and Certified Yoga Therapist, I am trained to help you thrive. Consider my client in the photo above. She’s 83 years old and began practicing Yoga 6 months ago. That’s some Ojas! You can lower your eyebrows, Ojas means vitality in Yoga and Ayurveda.
Faced with health concerns, that Retiree transformed her quality of life with Therapeutic Yoga.
This is how it works:
- Breath exercises help strengthen Heart & calm Mind
- Gentle stretches strengthen internal & external Muscles
- Natural weight-bearing poses help strengthen Bones
Medical science continues to bare out results like these and top-rated Hospitals increasingly recommend integrating a daily Yoga practice to restore wellness and resilience.
Ultimately, that is what Health is: the vitality and resilience to enjoy your life.
Virya or “right effort” varies from person to person but the key is “effort”. Yes, practicing Yoga once a month is better than nothing, but a daily practice is more beneficial. (dreaming of a Comfortable retirement is nice but without effort it might be only a dream).
Strong Heart. Strong Muscles. Strong Mind. Strong Bones.
Therapeutic Yoga requires no expensive gear and can be practiced at home or in small groups. And if you are uncomfortable at the thought of yoga pants, great news: they are not a pre-requisite (simply an excuse). I say that with gentleness. I say that because it is true.
Yoga is for every body.
